Sabretooth Slot from WMS
Available In:

This colorful and atmospheric slot from Williams Interactive (WMS) takes you back to the time when sabretooth tigers and woolly mammoths roamed the Earth. There are some interesting features to get your teeth into. In the base game a special tiger symbol can trigger expanding wilds, increasing the number of line wins. There is a surprise in store for the free spins bonus game. This is not so much in the game-play, the surprise comes from what the bonus reels look like!

Setup of the Sabretooth Slot

There is nothing too unusual about the setup of this game. It is a standard casino slot, with 5 reels, 4 rows of symbols on each, and 40 win lines. You can bet from 1c a line and up. You’ll find the usual selection of wilds, scatters and unique symbols on the reels. No playing card fillers are used for Sabretooth, instead the lower paying symbols are different fruits.

The biggest animal also has the biggest line prize. This is the wholly mammoth, which pays 500 coins for the full set of 5. A Rhino will a giant horn comes next at 300 coins for 5, with a Dodo and some kind of mammal following up at 250 and 100 coins for 5 respectively. All of these symbols will pay out for 3 of a kind or more.

While prizes seem on the low side, you need to keep in mind that symbols appear stacked on the reels. Your big wins from the base game will come those times you trigger a group of line wins at the same time.

This is made easier by the wilds, which are the tiger symbols. These appear on reels 2, 3 and 4 – and can also appear stacked. There is no individual line win for these symbols, they combine with the other regular symbols to create extra wins.

Fruits, including a pear and cherry make up the smaller line hits.

Special Tiger Symbol and Nudging Wilds

A unique face-on Sabretooth tiger symbol can appear on the first reel only. When you see this, and have one or more of the regular wilds in view, then a roar sound effect is triggered, along with a claw animation over the reels.

The regular wild then nudges up or down to cover all 4 of the rows on whichever reel it is on. This can help to create several extra wins at times.

Fire-Up the Frozen Blocks Free Spins Bonus Game

The final symbol is a fire, in a circle of stone. This is a scatter symbol, though you need to line up 3+ on consecutive reels from the left to trigger the free spins bonus game. When you start your 8 free spins, you’ll see that the symbols on the reels and the background graphics completely change.

Instead of a jungle scene, you’ll see what looks like a glacier at the sides of the reels, and all the animal symbols now come encased in blocks of ice! Other than the graphics changes, the game is the same as before. You can trigger the nudging wilds feature, and retrigger the free spins while enjoying this bonus.

Modern Design of this Prehistoric Slot

While the symbols are detailed and nicely drawn, there is nothing that stands out on the reels of this game. In a live casino, the top section of the cabinet will catch your eye. This is a static design, not a second screen, and shows a very detailed picture of a sabretooth tiger – along with a mention of the nudging wilds.

Both the jungle and the glacier art surrounding the reels work well. For me the contrast is welcome, the bonus game feels different with new icy designs in play. Sound effects include the obligatory roars – especially when you get the expanding wilds. This also comes with a large multi-clawed scratch over the reels.

You’ll also here the gentle, almost ambient electronic tinkles which fans of WMS slots over the years will be familiar with.

Should You Get Your Teeth into the Sabretooth Slot?

This title is certainly worth a spin. As casino slots goes it ticks all the right boxes in terms of an attractive design and solid game play. The features are not unique, with expanding wilds common enough and free spins also used frequently. How you will trigger the expanding wilds (via the special symbol on reel 1) is new. If you are lucky enough to line up stacked symbols at the same time as the wilds expand – you could be looking at a significant prize. Topping the reasons to play is the entertaining contrast between the graphics of the base game and the ice-age themed bonus round.
