Plataea Slot from WMS
Available In:
USA Regional

Unless you are a fan of ancient history, the theme of this slot will not be obvious from the title alone. Plataea was a battle between the Greek and Persian armies, at a time when both were world-powers – around 400BC. Once you see the warriors helmet, long ship with distinctive sail, and sword and spear combination on the reels – you’ll soon realize that this is a Greek-themed slot.

This game uses the ‘Hot Hot Respins’ system, which works in conjunction with the stacked reels to give you 2 respins at certain times. This can help turn an ordinary spin into a big prize. There is also a retriggerable free spins bonus game, where the hot hot respins still occur.

Big Reels Setup of the Plataea Slot

The reels take up most of the screen of this game – with little room for decorations around them. This is the slightly bigger 5×4 setup common to many WMS slot games. You’ll find 40 win lines crossing them, and can play from just 1c per line and up.

Unusually, the symbols are very close in value. The higher paying symbols are two warriors, one with arm raised and ready to strike, and a lady. These are worth 150 coins for 5, 50 for 4 and 15 for 3. The next level down sees 4 more unique symbols; a ship, shield with crossed sword, helmet and sword with sheath. These symbols are also worth 150 coins for 5, with 40 and 10 for 4. The pillar, goblet and coin are the lower paying symbols, going from 100 down to 5 coins.

With wins of this size, you’ll soon realize that you need to hit multiple wins in the same spin to win much money from this slot. Symbols will appear stacked on the reels, which will often help you to connect those 5 of a kind sequences.

There is a wild symbol in play, this is the close up of the guy in a golden helmet – who is staring out of the screen at you. This will also appear stacked on the reels, and will substitute for every symbol with the exception the Acropolis (feature) symbol.

Hot Hot Respins Feature

Respins can happen at any time during either the base game or the free spins round. This is triggered by hitting stacked symbols which cover all 4 positions of the first reel. You will see a flame character appear, complete with eyes, and bob around at the top of that first reel. After any wins have been collected, any symbols which are the same as the stacked one and any wilds will be given a flame border. The remaining symbols will then respin. Assuming you get at least one more of your symbol or a wild, the reels will then spin one more time. This gives you 2 opportunities to improve your win, with no extra cost.

10 Free Spins Bonus Feature with Respins

You need a minimum of 3 the acropolis bonus symbols to trigger the minimum 10 free spins. There is a pop up asking you to tap the screen to begin. The game in the free spins bonus round is the same as during the main game. You will be able to hit the Hot Hot Respins, which effectively pause your total of remaining free spins for 2 spins each time.

Classic Historical Slot Design

The upper part of the cabinet shows a striking image, along with a notice that you are playing a Hot Hot Respins machine. As for the rest of the slot design – this is very much standard fare from WMS. You’ll have a golden surround to the reels, which are backed with a cream / tan color.

Symbols are smartly drawn, though nothing too outstanding compared to other slots. The standout for me is the red warrior in action.

Flames provide the main animation during the Hot Hot Respins bonus. This is reused from other slots, though is an effective fiery animation none the less. For me the game is a little too slow cycling through the different winning combinations, especially those times you get 4+ wins from a single spin.

Should You Do Battle with Plataea?

This is a solid and enjoyable slot. If you are expecting multiple unique features and bonus games, then you’ll need to look elsewhere. Plataea is all about the game play, stacked symbols and the respins feature. While 10 free spins are welcome, this is the only diversion from the regular game. Having a few spins which trigger respins during the bonus game can extend it for some time. This is one of many casino slots which are certainly worth a spin, though unlikely to become a long-term favorite for many players.
