When you play this slot it is worth keeping in mind that just over 20 years ago, the original version was a pioneering game. Catch the Big One had the first second-screen bonus game of any slot. It is amazing to think of how far online slots have come in the last two decades.

Reel ‘Em In: Catch the Big One 2 has kept a lot of ideas from that original. You will of course find upgraded graphics, better animations and more modern sound effects. This slot still uses a traditional 3-reel setup – and the bonus game still has a fishing theme to it. The fishing game is reached via the free spins bonus round. This will give you a shot at one of 8 levels of progressive jackpot.

3 Reel Base Game

You’ll find mechanical reels on this upgraded slot. There are 3 reels, which are set up to mimic the original machines where ‘stops’ mean that sometimes the symbols hit the win-lines, and sometimes they do not. 9 win-lines cross the reels, with bet sizes up to 175 coins per spin available.

On these reels you’ll find very traditional slot symbols. There are sevens, bars and bonus symbols only in play. 7’s come in white, blue and green. Your biggest wins will come from lining up 3 of the same, with small consolation prizes for 3 mixed. Bar symbols also have 3 types, the usual single, double and triple bars. Again, a small prize is available for 3 mixed.

Wild symbols are extra special in this game. These come with ‘3x’ written on them – and will multiply any win they get involved with by 3. This can be useful when you get one of the higher paying 7 symbols.

The final symbols you’ll find on the reels trigger the bonus. There are two types. Some are ‘Catch the Big One 2’ bonus symbols. The others are regular symbols with a small green fish on them. These are scatter symbols, and so do not need to line up on one of the win lines. You need 3 in view to trigger the bonus game.

Reel ‘Em In Catch The Big One 2 Spins and Fishing Bonus Game

Action takes place on the upper screen when you hit the bonus game. First you will see an animation of a giant fish swimming right at you, mouth open. You then get awarded 7 free spins and are instructed to start the games by clicking the start button. The display changes to fish floating around, each of them has a jackpot prize ranging from around $10 to more than $1000 displayed underneath.

Your 7 free spins are rapid, and you’ll be trying to hit 3 of the bonus symbols during this. These do hit more frequently, giving you a shot at the next part of the game. Each time you hit 3 bonus symbols, you will see a worm on a fish hook in the middle of the upper screen. 8 fish then circle this, and descent on it in a big whirl of color. The scene then pans to a fisherman in a boat. He pulls up the line, and the ‘winning fish’ comes with it. You’ll hear him say ‘that’s a keeper’, and the type of fish and jackpot amount won are shown to the left. If you are lucky, you can get 2 or more attempts at catching the biggest paying fish.

Lively Aquatic Design

Bright blues and greens have been used for this game – with small details like the blue backing of the reels adding to the overall effect. There is a big contrast between the upper screen, which has very detailed animations, and the fairly plain mechanical style reels on the lower cabinet. There are some retro touches including LCD type displays for your coins and wins.

Animations on the upper cabinet are cartoon style, though excellent in terms of detail, production and character. You’ll be hoping to catch the big red fish, as this has the biggest jackpot prize attached. There is a fast-paced bluegrass type tune playing, and entertaining voice-over effects on top.

Should You Go Fishing for Prizes with the New Catch the Big One Slot?

Overall this is an entertaining game, which contrasts the 3-reel regular slot gaming with a more complex bonus game. There are some chances to win big via the 3x multiplier symbol in the base game – especially those times you get more than one. In the bonus game, you will have a shot at winning more than one progressive jackpot each time. If you enjoyed the original and pioneering Catch the Big One, then Catch the Big One 2 is a must see.
