Bier Haus Slots
Basing a slot game on a German beer house is such a good idea that I am surprised that WMS are the first to have done it. This game has symbols you’ll associate with Oktoberfest, the annual party in Munich, Germany where beer is swilled, lederhosen are worn and the order of the day is buxom barmaids with hair in traditional braids.
WMS have marked this as one of their ‘Deluxe’ slots, indicating better graphics, smoother game-play and more interactive features than many of their slots. You can play Bier Haus both at live casinos or online gaming sites – for me it has the feel of a slot which was designed first for casinos.
Playing the Bier Haus Slot
There is no getting away from the beer in this game, with symbols depicting ‘Steins’ (large glasses) of beer, the bar sign, barmaids holding more beer and a caricature German guy with a huge moustache holding a beer of his own. There is a Bavarian ‘fairy tale’ castle too, and some red leaves with an acorn – which signify October, the time when the famous beer festival takes place.
There are 40 win lines, and you can bet from just 1c per line up to $1 – making the spin range 40c through to $40. With many of the symbols stacked on the reels, you will often get multiple wins at the same time. The biggest standard prize comes from the cheerful German guy; this is worth 500 coins for 5 on a line. The castle comes next, worth 150 coins for 5, with the Bier sign worth 125. My experience was of plenty of smaller wins, coming from the acorns, accordion and the playing card suits – the bigger wins come from the bonus games.
The symbol you’ll want to see a lot of is the delicious looking stein of beer. This is the wild symbol and will substitute for any of the other regular symbols to make winning combinations. With many of the symbols stacked in this game (including the steins of beer), you will have occasions where you hit 5+ win lines at the same time.
Bier Haus Regular and Gold Free Spins
You can trigger 2 different free spins games with this slot, with 3 barmaids getting you the initial 5 spins and further barmaids 5 more each. There are different barmaid symbols, which can appear on their own or stacked with others. One has a red surround, and the other a golden one. These trigger either the standard (red) or enhanced (gold) games.
On the standard game, you simply run through your spins in the same way of any WMS free spins round. These go fast, and you’ll see your total accumulating on the bottom right of the screen. If you are lucky enough to trigger the golden spins, then the barmaids turn into sticky wild symbols. Any that you hit during the game remain in place for the next spins – at the same time as substituting for the regular symbols. This does make a big difference to your wins. By the time you get to your last few spins, you could easily be hitting multiple winning combinations whichever other symbols appear. At the end of the free spins game you will see a message showing the total that you have won, and then return to the regular reels.
For me this slot deserves the ‘Deluxe’ label which WMS has assigned. The graphics and general game-play are very professionally produced. I can see this appealing to fans of live slots who enjoy recreating the feeling of the casino at home. This is not a multi-featured game compared with some of today’s titles – instead a solid and enjoyable slot which has hit on a universally popular theme, beer!
Oktoberfest has become famous around the world and gets as many as 6 million visitors every year. This is held in the Bavarian capital of Munich and lasts for 16 days in late September and early October. The Oktoberfest has been running since 1810, when it was started to celebrate the marriage of crown prince Ludwig.
