Flying Colors Slot Review
You’ll love the bonus round in this online slot game. You get to pilot a WW1 era biplane, and shoot down your enemies! Flying colors is a beautifully produced 5 reel video slot from Rival Gaming. There is plenty more going on besides the dog-fight bonus too. The characters involved are the ‘real men’ of this bygone age, when big mustaches and even bigger egos were the order of the day.
With a top prize from regular play of 10,000 coins, a ‘can’t lose’ free spins game and of course the dog fight itself, this is a slot you will not want to miss.
How to Win on the Flying Colors Slot
Barrage balloons are the top paying symbol on Flying Colors. This is also the wild (it will substitute for the regular symbols, though not the bonus ones). Lining up 5 of these on one of the 20 win lines will get you 10,000 coins, 4 are worth 1000, 3 get you 100 coins – with a consolation prize of 5 coins for just 2.
There is a jackpot symbol, which is a cartoon lady with an oversized head – this is almost in a Betty Boo style. This is worth 1000 coins for 5 on a line, and also pays all the way down to 2 from the left.
You enemies are also on the reels. These are the green and yellow biplanes, worth 500 and 300 for 5 of a kind respectively. Playing card symbols are used in this slot, though these have been designed to look like the badge emblems on the side of the planes – a nice touch.
There are two extra symbols, the red plane and the front view of the propeller of that plane. These are scatter symbols which play a role in triggering the free spins bonus game and dog fight.
Bonus Games on Flying Colors
Propellers trigger the can’t lose free spins. If you get 3 propellers on the triggering spin you get 7 free games, 4 is worth 14 and 5 gets you 25. When you start the free spins round you will see the balloon moving up over the first reel and dropping bombs. These then explode into wild clouds, which stay for the duration – making reel 1 completely wild. In addition to this, you are guaranteed at least one win for every spin.
The dogfight bonus game is triggered by hitting 3 of the Red Kaiser symbols (the red biplane) anywhere on the reels. Here you take the seat in the red plane and take to the skies in a first person shooter. You will see a target, which you train onto your enemy’s planes. You move though the skies by moving your mouse around, and when you have an enemy in your sites you can click to fire. You have a health meter, which goes down when your opponents hit you. When you clear them all, or run out of health then the bonus game ends.
Setup of Flying Colors
Putting the excitement of the dog fight to one side for a moment, the basic setup for this game is a 5 reel video slot with 3 symbols on each reel and 20 win lines. You can choose to play fewer win lines, and to adjust your coin size and the number of coins played per line.
The design is excellent, with bold colors and a string sound track with the occasional sound of machine guns in the background. Behind the reels are open skies, with flags showing the win lines at either side. Symbols are drawn in a cartoon style which is typical of Rival Gaming. There are small animations, for example the barrage balloon exploding to become a wild symbol. When you hit a win you will hear a military drum ‘rat a tat tat’ sound, this becomes more of a drum roll when you get a bigger win.
Animation takes on a new level when you get to the fight bonus round, this is as good as many early console games for sure.
Overall Experience with Flying Colors
You can probably tell that I have become an instant fan of this game – and will get certain to go back some time soon. Everything fits together nicely, and the all-important chance of winning a big prize is always there (10,000 coins from regular play is possible). The two bonus rounds are both excellent. While the dogfight is a lot of fun, the no-lose free spins are also worth hitting, these can be very profitable indeed.
