All Aboard Slot from Rival Gaming
Steam trains, particularly those pioneering days in which the railroads were being built, is not something you’d immediately associate with an online slot. Rival Gaming has taken this idea and created an engaging (and somewhat endearing) game.
In addition to some nice cartoon-style graphics depicting the era, there are some good reasons to check out this real money slot game. These include expanding wild symbols; a free spins round (where any wins you land will be multiplied by up to 4) and a break out bonus game where you get to choose box cars for extra coins.
How You’ll Win on the All Aboard Slot
This slot has 20 win lines and most of the symbols require 3 or more from the left on one of them to trigger a win. The best paying symbol is a golden handle of some sort. This pays 1600 coins if you hit 5, 800 for 4, 40 coins for just 3 and a consolation prize of 2 coins for only 2 on a win-line.
Other regular symbols include what looks like a ticket inspector (worth 480 coins for 5), a yellow repair car (360), boxcar with a horse’s head sticking out (320) and one of those pump handle trains that often feature in comedy sketches (240). There are other train related symbols making up the smaller wins too – this slot does not resort to using playing card symbols.
The steam locomotive is worth hitting, even though this will only appear on the first 2 reels. This is a wild symbol, substituting for any of the regular symbols above to create more wins. What happens when you hit one is that a railway track expands to cover all 3 positions on that reel. A train then goes past, turning all 3 positions wild. This can create a lot of extra wins, especially those times that you are lucky enough to hit trains on reels 1 and 2 at the same time.
Bonus Games on All Aboard
There are two bonus games, each triggered by different symbols.
First the train driver (called Casey Jones according to the pay table) will trigger a free spins bonus round. The number of free spins you receive will depend on how many of this symbol you get anywhere on the reels. 3 will trigger 10 free spins (with a 2x multiplier), 4 will get you 40 free spins with a 3x multiplier and 5 get you the maximum 40 free spins with a 4x multiplier.
The other special symbol is a bell, you cannot miss this as it chimes each time you see one anywhere on the reels. If you hit 3 or more, then a curtain will be pulled down over the reels – and you’ll be taken to the break out boxcar bonus game.
This is a simple enough game. You see 3 rails across the screen, each with 3 boxcars. You then click on a boxcar, which reveals a number of coins (and some escaping startled chickens). You keep going until you hit an empty car, at which point the bonus game ends. I found these wins to be generous compared to the payouts from the regular game.
Setup and Design for All Aboard
This game uses the standard 5 reel, 3 row, 20 line system which Rival Gaming use for most of their online slot games. You’ll get a lot more flexibility with the lines, coins and coin size than you do on many other slots. The smallest spin for all 20 lines is 20c, though you can go all the way to $200 per spin if your bankroll is big enough. There is an auto play function included too.
The design for All Aboard is deliberately retro, and in the style of a comic book or TV cartoon. At the top of the reels, the logo is shrouded by smoke, and the metal side of a steam train has the play and bet sizing buttons riveted to it. Each of the symbols has a basic animation, for example the steam whistle gets a level pulled and steam comes out.
If I had one small complaint it is that the expanding wilds sequence starts to feel slow. This is balanced by the fact that it usually generates some nice wins. There are no special effects for the free spins, only a counter in the corner for your totals and remaining spins. The break out bonus game is amusing, with chickens and feathers flying when you open many of the boxcars. Sounds are on theme, though not particularly outstanding.
This slot has a certain charm, and I can see myself going back to play it again. The retro theme is unique, and there are several ways to grab yourself some big wins too!
