X-Men made a successful transition from comic-book favourites to big screen heroes, with Hugh Jackman as Wolverine the biggest star of the movies. This slot takes the X-Men theme and turns it into a highly playable game that makes the most of the 2 different camps of mutants, the heroes and the villains. There is an innovative free spins feature, where you will switch between hero mode and villain mode – potentially accumulating some big wins as you do so. This slot also includes the random progressive jackpots which are shared by all the Marvel titles. These can win you life changing money (think half a million dollars for the biggest prize).
I was not exactly blown away by the graphics of this game. There is very little around the frame of the reels, and the main view of the reels is simply head and shoulders type portraits of the main characters. The ‘good guys’ are in blue, and the bad guys have a red background. You’ll be pleased to know that the main stars from the movies are present including a Jackman-like Wolverine and stern looking Magneto – the silver surfer also makes an appearance. There is also an X-Men logo on the reels and a wild symbol too. Things are fairly quiet during the base game, with just computer beeps and winning jingles to keep you entertained. During the free spins game you’ll get a full blown and rather dramatic tune – along with some extra wilds. There are plenty of small animations for the different characters when they are involved in winning combinations.
How to Play & Real Money Versions of X-Men
This slot has a fixed 25 win lines which cross the standard 5 reel and 3 row grid from left to right. You cannot change this number, though you can adjust the number of coins per line and size of each coin. This gives you a lot of flexibility with your bet size, starting from just 25c per spin. The standard PlayTech auto-play option is available.
The single biggest prize does not come from any of the famous characters. Instead you can win 10,000 coins by hitting 5 of the wild symbols on a line. The prize for 4 is 3000 coins, with 500 for just 3 and 50 for 2. This symbol also substitutes for all of the regular symbols, with the standard exception of the scatter.
Heroes and villains are paired for the rest of the pay-outs. With Wolverine topping things for the heroes at 400 coins for 5. There are no playing cards used on this slot (which is a definite positive), instead the different heroes and villains occupy the pay table down to the smallest wins.
Scatter symbols come in the form of the X-Men logo / shield. This pays out differently to the other symbols, triggering wins for the total on the reels regardless of how they relate to the win-lines. If you get 5 of these at once you will win 200x your total bet, with 25x for 4, 5x for 3 and 1x your bet for just 1. With 3 or more scatters, you will also trigger the free spins bonus game.
Bonus Games on the X-Men Slot
This is a unique free spins game, with 2 different modes and unlimited spins for one of them. You will start off in Heroes mode. Here all of the symbols are heroes, with blue backgrounds. Strangely, the reels spin backwards during this part of the game.
You keep on spinning and accumulating wins, until you get a win with an extra wild on reel 3. This turns into a villain, and shifts you over to Villain mode. Now the reels are covered in the red-backed villain symbols only, and you’ll have 8 free spins – which count down in the top left. At any point you can hit another extra wild, taking you back to the unlimited spins of Heroes Mode. This too and fro carries on until you get to zero on the villains mode – at which point your wins are totalled and the game ends.
The progressive jackpot game which is shared between all the PlayTech Marvel slots can be triggered from this game. This is randomly awarded and is a game where you click logos to find which of 4 jackpots you will win. The smallest can be just $10 or more, while the biggest can be half a million or more.
When I first started playing this game the plain look of the reels made me wonder whether it was up to the standard of some of the other Marvel titles. After a couple of bonus games, I am convinced that this is one of the better games in this range. Check out X-Men for yourself soon.
