Sizzling Gems Slot from Novomatic
There are plenty of slots which have sparkling gems as the main symbols, and plenty of others that choose fruits and sevens instead. This is the first time I have come across a slot which combines the two – by creating gems that look like those traditional fruit slot symbols.
This 5-reel video slot is one of the straightforward games that Novomatic are well known for. There is no free spins or bonus game, just solid slots action including a wild symbol and scatters.
How to Win on Sizzling Gems
There are just 5 win lines for this game, the three horizontal and two V-shapes starting in the top and bottom symbols on the left hand reel. You’ll be able spin for just 8 coins per line (40c minimum), though the prizes outlined below are for the default 10 coins per line (50c per spin).
The highest paying of the regular symbols is the red 7. This looks impressive, with a ruby body studded with diamonds. As well as having the biggest prize, this symbol is wild – meaning it will substitute for any other fruit / gem symbols on the reels (though not the star scatter symbols). If you line up 5 of the red 7’s you’ll get a big 5,000-coin payout, with 2000 coins for just 2 and 400 coins for 3.
Melons look strange made into a gem, with an emerald body with ruby at one end (like the sliced open traditional watermelon symbol). This will get you 2,000 coins for 5 on a win-line. Grapes and Plums share the next level, coming in at 1000 coins with lemons and cherries triggering 500 coin wins for the full set. These are bigger than average wins, Novomatic is able to offer then since only having 5 win lines means they will come in somewhat less frequently than for slots with 20 or more lines.
Big Prizes for the Sizzling Gems Star Scatters
The biggest prize of all on Sizzling Gems comes from the scatter symbol. This is the standard gold star against a red background (it has also been made to look like 2 gems for this game). This is the only symbol which is not tied to any of the win lines, you’ll get paid for the total number in view when the reels stop.
Seeing 5 of the scatters means you win 25,000 coins, with 1000 coins for 4 and 400 for just 3. These are excellent prizes when you consider that the spin cost is just 50 coins!
Clean and Sparkling Design
Around the outside of the reels you will see an abstract orange pattern. This could be a sunset, or maybe a close up of some fire to go with the ‘sizzling’ theme. The reels are white, and the gems are very bold, clean and brightly colored. Some of the symbols work quite well when reinterpreted as fruits. For me the grapes and melon look a little strange – while the cherries and lemons are the best. The red 7’s stand out in design, someone obviously took a lot of time making these look very smart.
There are animations, though these are light effects and glow effects around the symbols, rather than anything too complex. When you spin the reels you’ll get the standard Novomatic beeps and mechanical sounding clunks when the reels stop. When you hit wins there are short tunes, like recreations of brass instruments by a computer.
Sparkling Gems Setup
There are 5 win lines as a default, and these are fixed in place (non-adjustable) for this slot. You can choose the number of coins to bet per line from 8 and up. Auto-play is offered as a simple start / stop option (this is reasonably fast). Novomatic slot fans will be pleased to know that the ticking sound after each win means that the gamble option is available too.
If you enjoy straightforward slots then the gems / fruit angle of Sizzling Gems certainly brings a new take to this tried and trusted formula. There are no bonus games or jackpots available for this game, with the focus on lining up the symbols. The main attraction of 25,000 coins for 5 of the scatter symbols does add some interest.
