Hold Your Horses Slots

No prizes for guessing that the main symbols on the reels of this older 5-reel slot game from Novomatic are equine in nature. Just about every variation of horse color and mane is covered in this game – where you’ll enjoy a re-spins system in addition to the standard game play. Unusually, horses can come in pairs, making it possible to hit 10 of a kind! This really comes into its own during the free spins bonus game. During this feature hitting a stacked column of any horse on reel one triggers re-spins which can cover much of the reels in the same symbol.

  • How to Win on Hold Your Horses

This game has 40 win lines crossing the 5 reels by 4 rows grid. Your biggest wins will come when you fill up a lot of the screen (or even all of it) with the same symbol. This could trigger a full 40 wins at 10 of a kind.

The best paying symbol is the lucky horseshoe, which is also the wild symbol. This does not come paired, so the maximum is 5 of a kind. This pays 500 coins, with 150 coins for 4 and 50 for just 3 from the left. When the horseshoe substitutes for one of the horse symbols, this is as a ‘pair’ – moving you up the pay table nicely, especially those times you get more than one pair / wild combination.

White horses are the top paying symbols, though all of them are fairly close in value. If you hit 10 of the white ones this pays 200 coins, with 100 for 9 going down to 15 coins for 5. The brown horse with a white main is worth 175 for the full 10 and a black horse 150. Ordinary brown horses follow, and the playing card symbols then make up the smaller wins. As with all Novomatic slots, you will be offered the opportunity to gamble after any win.

    Hold Your Horses Bonus Feature

Free spins are triggered using a unique re-spins feature. When you hit a stack of ‘bonus’ symbols, you’ll hear some slightly annoying trumpet sounds and the rest of the reels will spin again. If you add one or more of the bonus symbols, the spins continue. If you spin and do not hit a bonus symbol, then the normal game resumes. If you manage to cover all of the reels with the bonus symbols, then the free spins game kicks in with 15 free spins.

There is a major difference compared to the base game in this bonus feature. All of the horses now partake in the re-spins function. If you hit a stack of horses on reel 1, this stays in place while the rest of the non-matching symbols spin again. As long as you add either horses or wilds the spins continue (and the trumpet sounds go up in pitch!). Once you hit a spin with no extra horses of your type or wilds, your wins are totaled for that spin and the game continues. You can get some good coverage of the reels at times from this system.

Design and Setup of Hold Your Horses

Overall, the design of this slot is dated and a little dark. While the horses are nicely drawn, they are very obviously not created with anything resembling the latest design tools. The plain dark green background to the reels does not help with the overall impression. The only animation comes from a glowing of the horseshoe wild symbol. This is a shame as the horses would be great subjects for both on-reel and full screen animations.

Sounds are standard bleeps and whirrs – with the trumpet sounds for the respin feature one of my least favorite slot sounds!

This game has 40 win lines, which can be adjusted. You can bet from 1c per line, and increase the number of coins per line if you wish.

    Overall Experience

Hold Your Horses does have a couple of features which make it worth a look. The paired symbols with the potential for 10 of a kind wins are interesting. This has also been used by IGT for slots such as Cats. The re-spins feature works well in the bonus game too – giving you the potential to get the entire grid covered in a single symbol (and / or wilds).

What holds this one back is the design, which is very dated. Novomatic has a good track record for updating their slots, and for me Hold Your Horses would be a good candidate for a modern make-over.
