Hook’s Heroes Slots from NetEnt

Pirate themed slots are reasonably common, with all of the major slot software houses having at least one in their portfolio. I am sure you will not have played a pirate themed game which comes close to Hook’s Heroes though! This feels more like a pantomime or children’s amateur dramatics setup than true plunder on the high seas. The production from the graphics and animations through to the sound effects is excellent – and you have some big win potential too – with 194,800 coin wins possible from a single spin.

You’ll find 3 different bonus features in Hook’s Heroes. These can either come in the form of single spins, or as complete bonus games – where you will get to choose which one you want to play.

  • How to Win on Hook’s Heroes

This game has 20 win-lines, and despite the 3 feature setup most of your wins will come from simply lining up the symbols. The best paying symbols are all pirate characters, who are a real mixed bunch which are dressed up in different theatrical type pirate costumes.

The best paying regular symbol is a guy wearing a white mask and red hat with crossed bones on it. This will get you 900 coins for 5, 300 for 4 and 50 for just 3. A lady who does not look too happy about wearing an oversized necklace comes next (700 coins for 5) with a lady with braces and glasses next (500), then a kid with a duck on his head (350) and a large guy with a pirate eye-patch completing the unique symbols paying 250 coins for 5.

There are playing card symbols, which look like they have been cut out of paper and given different designs, to make up the smaller wins.

Wild symbols are a kid with a big pirate hat and hooked hand. These will substitute for any of the symbols on the reels except the scatters. There are no separate wins listed, so 5 on a line presumably triggers the best possible regular win (the guy with the white mask).

Choice of 3 Different Bonus Features

Scatter symbols look fantastic. This is a guy in a crocodile costume, which comes complete with animations whenever it lands. If you hit 2 of these anywhere on the reels, you’ll trigger one of the three bonus types for one single spin. If you hit 3 scatters, then you go to a break out screen where you will choose your free spins bonus – which comes with different amounts of spins depending on which type you choose.

The first bonus is a ‘Mermaid Feature’. Here the graphics change to show a ragdoll type mermaid on the right, and octopus tentacles sticking out of the sea on the left. There are multipliers in play during this bonus, with all wins doubled and any wins involving a wild symbol multiplied by 4.

Pirate bonuses dispense with the win-lines, paying instead for the total number of symbols anywhere in view. You’ll see a pirate (well, a kid dressed as one) swing in on a rope over the reels when you trigger this feature.

Fairly bonuses involve a blue fairy with pink hair, and between 2 and 5 random wilds for each spin. This is the most valuable of the 3 features, especially when these wilds combine with the regular wilds to create multiple wins.

When you hit the free spins round with 3 scatters, you’ll have a choice of which of the above bonuses to use. If you choose the mermaid you’ll get 15 spins, with 10 for the pirate and 7 for the fairy.

    Pantomime Design

The graphics are excellent throughout this game, with lots of entertaining details. In the background you’ll see a moving sea, with a pirate ship held up on a pole on the right hand side (complete with hand). There is a lot of movement, and the background will change (those octopus’ tentacles for example) during the bonus features.

Symbols are full of character, and use slightly pastel colors to offset the cartoon-like look and feel. The kid with the duck on his head stands out (check his 2 front teeth) as well as the lead character with the hooked hand. The only real animation on the reels is the scatter symbol, who shakes his head from inside the mouth of a theatrical crocodile each time it hits.

When the bonus games kick in you get more animations, as well as changes to the background. The fairy is very effective, looking like a ragdoll put together by kids!

While you play you’ll get a very cheerful Caribbean type tune. The style of this could easily fit with a children’s TV show.

Setup-wise this is very much a regulation NetEnt slot. There are 20 win lines (fixed this time) and a chance to adjust both your coin size and the multiplier (bet level). You can enjoy this game on auto-play if you wish.

    Overall Experience

This online slot is a gem. The production is wonderful, the game play is solid and there are 3 different features to keep you engaged (and hopefully keep those wins flowing!). The fairy feature will usually bring the most wins, though the 4x multiplier for wild wins during the mermaid feature is certainly worth having. Check out Hook’s Heroes for yourself soon!
