Golden Shamrock Slot from NetEnt
Few slot themes are more enduring than the ‘Luck of the Irish’ – the topic of Golden Shamrock from Net Entertainment. This 5-reel video slot has slick production and features all the classic symbols – including a Leprechaun, which also acts as the wild symbol.
There is a free spins bonus game that involves picking from the golden shamrocks to reveal the number of spins and your multiplier. Naturally, you’ll get to enjoy some traditional Irish jig music while you play.
How to Win on Golden Shamrock
Wins in this game are assisted by the Leprechaun, which appears on reels 2, 3 and 4. This is not only a wild symbol (substituting for everything except the scattered shamrocks), it expands to fill entire reels. This will only happen when wins are possible, and the Leprechaun will toss some gold coins into the air. Each time the wild appears, he says (in a classic Irish accent). ‘If you’re not lucky to be Irish, then you are lucky enough’. This is amusing the first few times, though it does get a little repetitive during a longer session!
Regular wins are topped by the pot of gold. 5 of these on a win line will get you 4000 coins, with 200 coins for 4, 50 for 3 and 10 coins for just 2. All of the top 4 symbols pay down to 2 of a kind. Next comes a golden horseshoe, worth 2000 coins for the full 5. This is followed by a golden harp (1500 coins for 5) and a traditional leprechaun’s hat (1000). Smaller wins are made by a pipe (which has some ‘magical’ purple smoke coming from it), two mugs of beer, an accordion and colored bags with the playing card symbols ace, king and queen on them.
Golden Shamrock Pick Your Free Spins Feature
The golden shamrock symbols are scatters, which means they are independent of the 20 win lines. If you hit 3 or more of these during the base game, you will trigger the free spins bonus round. This starts with a sub-game where you need to click on one of the scatters to reveal the number of free spins and multiplier. For example, you might reveal 10 spins with a 2x multiplier. The prizes for the symbols you did not choose will be revealed after you make your pick.
Once you go to the bonus round the Irish music changes instrument, though sounds much the same. You only need 2 of the shamrocks to extend this bonus game – again with a pick-game in between. 5 extra spins are a common selection.
There is no big announcement of your total at the end of the free spins, you’ll simply transition back into the base game.
Traditional Irish Design
At the bottom of the transparent reels you will see rolling hills with striped patterns making them look like they were recently harvested. Above is a blue sky with wispy white clouds. Around the reels could be a deep forest, or maybe the inside of a leprechaun’s home. There are tree branches, acorns and lanterns all in view. The Golden Shamrock logo is over to the right, with a sign showing that your maximum win per spin is 200,000 coins taking up the middle position.
The symbols are very nicely drawn, and the clichéd traditional Irish icons are all included. The bags with playing card symbols on them look great, and the pot of gold (though no rainbow) is also a stand out.
While the symbols do not animate when involved in wins, the wild Leprechaun certainly does. He will expand to cover the entire reel, then you will see a zoom in on his hand while he tosses and catches some gold coins – along with the spoken good luck message. The jig music in the background is unobtrusive enough and does a good job of adding to the traditional feel.
20 Lines to Get Lucky
You can select any number up to 20 win-lines on Golden Shamrock (20 is the default). I prefer the full 20, as this takes maximum advantage of the expanding wilds. As usual for NetEnt slots, there is a lot of flexibility in your coin size, and the number of coins bet per line. You’ll find the usual bet max and auto play options are offered.
Golden Shamrock is a solid slot, and as with all NetEnt games the production is first class. I am not sure it really does enough to stand out from the large number of Irish themed slot games out there. The free spins bonus game is a decent enough highlight (especially when you get a multiplier for your wins and extend it with extra shamrocks).
