Fisticuffs Slot from NetEnt

This quirky video slot from Net Entertainment creates a cartoon version of Victorian era boxing. Essentially this is a simple slot. There is a unique feature, with two boxers squaring off in the middle of the reels and creating extra wilds.

All of the action happens within the base game – with no free spins round or break out bonus games. As you would expect from NetEnt slots, the production of visuals and sound effects is excellent – really bringing the theme to life.

  • How to Win on Fisticuffs

Unusually, you can win from both directions on Fisticuffs – with 3 or more symbols from the right hand side to the left also triggering prizes. There are 10 win-lines in each direction in total – I should note that you can’t win in both directions at the same time.

All of the symbols are boxing related, and the gold belt is the best paying – clocking in at 500 coins for 5 of a kind. You will also win 125 coins for 4 and 20 coins for 3. Next comes a gold trophy, which is worth 250 coins for the full set of 5 – followed by a pair of old-fashioned red boxing gloves which are worth 150 for 5.

There are no playing card symbols on this slot, instead the smaller wins are made up of a bell, stool, old style boxers boot and a pot. Wild symbols are circles with the word ‘wild’ – these can appear individually or as part of the special boxing bonus feature.

    Boxers Bonus Feature

In addition to the regular wilds, you will see 2 boxer wilds on reels 2 and 3. There is a skinny guy with a mustache, and a round guy. Individually, these will act as wild symbols – substituting for the regular symbols covered above to create extra wins.

When you get the 2 boxers adjacent to each other, the boxing feature starts. You will see floodlights come down, and the 2 boxers will fight, creating extra wilds. How they fight depends on how they line up on the reels.

If they are right next to each other horizontally, then the big guy unleashes a huge punch which sends the smaller guy flying into the first reel. This creates 3 wilds in a row horizontally (which means at least one 4-of a kind win is guaranteed). If the boxers are diagonally adjacent, then the little guy unleashed a flurry of punches onto the stomach of the big guy. This then sets up 3 wilds in an ‘L’ shape on reels 2 and 3.

This is not the end of the bonus game, as the fight is followed by a respin. The wilds are held in place for this, with all of the other reels spinning. If you are lucky enough to hit some of the regular wilds during this spin, there is the potential for some bigger wins.

    Deliberately Retro Design

NetEnt has done a great job in recreating the era for this slot, with muted color and characterful boxers really adding some charm to the game. Outside of the reels you can see a little of the ropes of a boxing ring, and the hint of a crowd beyond. The logo above the reels is very Victorian in the typography.

While the symbols are not too detailed, they all work well – having that dated look to them. The best symbols by far are the two boxers, who will spring to life when they land adjacently to each other. This is a short and entertaining animation, and the extra wilds it produced will stop you from losing interest after a few times!

The sound effects are all on theme, with the ringing of the bell to end rounds and punching noises again helping to bring the overall theme to life.

    Bi-Directional Setup

Win lines coming from both directions is tied in to the two opponents in the match, though it takes a little getting used to if you are used to wins always coming from the left to right. With 20 win lines in total and a smallest coin value at 2c, you can spin from 40c and up. Adding up to 10 coins per line gives you a lot of flexibility with your bet sizes.

    Overall Experience

This is certainly an original and quaint slot – though I have to wonder whether the single feature is enough to keep people entertained over the long term. The first few times those entertaining boxers appear and create wilds are excellent (the guys are full of character), though after a while this does lose its edge. I enjoyed this slot, and will certainly be back for another session at some point down the line.
