Dolphin Quest Slots
If I had to choose one word to describe this underwater themed slot by MicroGaming, it would be ‘Lavish’. The attention to detail in the graphics and smoothness of the play and animations makes this stand out in what is now a very popular theme area. Dolphin Quest is a 5 reel, 4 row video slot with a generous 50 win-lines. It has a bonus round which involves stopping big numbers as they cascade down a waterfall. You will also find stacked wild symbols on the reels, which can create multiple wins at any moment.
This online game is set against a colourful coral reef. What I like about this is that some thought has gone into how the colours would look underwater. Small touches like bubbles separating the reels (instead of lines) also improve the attractiveness of the game. Symbols include a variety of fish and sea creatures. There is a lion fish, sea horses, a hermit crab, octopus and even a puffer-fish. The reels themselves are transparent, which shows more of the reef when you spin. Best of all are the animations, which are smooth and professional, without being over the top. When you hit a wild symbol (stacked or individual), these will expand in size – and hopefully make up some winning combinations for you too!
Playing Dolphin Quest
50 win lines give you a lot of potential winning combinations from left to right. You will not be able to change this number, though your bet size is pretty flexible. This is from 50c per spin (1c per line) up to $2.50c. Auto-play is standard across MicroGaming slots, you can choose 10, 25, 50 or 100 spins – or set it to keep spinning until you say stop.
The Dolphin Quest logo is wild, and will substitute for anything except for the scatter / bonus symbols. This is also the top paying symbol, worth 50x your bet or 2500 coins for 5 on a win-line. Keep in mind that this is stacked (will sometimes cover all 4 positions on a reel). This means you will often hit multiple wins across different win-lines with this wild.
Next in the pay table comes the 2 different dolphin symbols. There is one on its own, and a pair. Each pays 400 coins (8x your bet) for 5 down to 50 coins for 3. Turtles and the Octopus come next (250 coins for 5) with the rays, lion fish and others following this.
Scatter symbol are logos showing a golden dolphin. These appear on reels 3, 4 and 5 only. If you get all 3 then you trigger the bonus game.
Bonus Game for Dolphin Quest
This is known as the ‘Dolphin Quest Bonus’ though there are no dolphins involved, and I could not personally imagine how clicking a stop button related to a quest!
You go to a new screen, which shows a waterfall that has numbers cascading down it in 3 wide reels. Some of these numbers go into the 1000’s, while others are 400 to 800. You hit a stop button, and click on the remaining reels – which stops them one at a time. The first time you see those numbers stopping, it is easy to imagine riches coming your way. For example you get 800, 400 and 1000 across the 3 reels – and wonder if that means you just hit yourself a jackpot.
When the picking part ends you’ll find that this win is in coins. The example above 2200 would be $22 at 1c per line. This is a nice boost to your bankroll of course, though not exactly the kind of money to start booking that vacation with
Overall this is a simple slot that will have a broad appeal to those who enjoy games without too many levels of complexity. The main reason to play is the beautifully produced graphics. The attention to detail, especially with the animated sequences when each creature is involved in a win, is excellent. I’m not so sure that MicroGaming have the sound effects right, the plodding tune in the background is harmless enough – though after a while it does start to jar a little.
I’d rate this as a lower variance slot. You’ll get a lot of play for your money – and the occasional bonus game can give your bankroll a welcome boost. If you enjoy the underwater themed slots games, I would rate Dolphin Quest a must see for the graphics alone. Check it out for yourself soon.
