Break Away Slots

This slot is based on the fast-paced world of Ice Hockey. It is colourful, fast and includes a random feature where hockey players crash into the reels – sending them wild. The setup is a 5 reel, 3 row slot which uses the all-ways (243 winning combinations) method of calculating wins. When you do hit a win, it will crack (like ice) and disappear – allowing new symbols to fall into its place. This is known as ‘rolling reels’ and can create a sequence of wins from a single spin. There is a free spins bonus game where the rolling reels get additional multipliers; this is where the outsized wins will come from in this slot.

Design-wise, Break Away is a cascade of colours and action. The overall feel is of a 5+ year old slot – more recent ones have done away with the plain white background to the reels for a start. Cracked ice can be seen around the frame of the reels. The symbols are all hockey icons, including the entire rink, skates a flaming puck, goal keeper, referee and players in white and red. I am always happy to see a slot that does not need to resort to using playing card symbols.

There are animations, including the cracking of symbols which get replaced. These are preceded by short individual sequences on the reels – for example the skates growing and shrinking. There is a lively driving tune playing in the background too.

Playing Break Away

There is no need to select any win-lines. The 243 ways system pays for 3+ symbols from the left hand side on consecutive reels, regardless of their position. This makes sure you’ll never miss a win-line and makes the action easy to follow. You can adjust your coin size (from 1c to 50c) which is multiplied by 50 for each spin. On top of this you can play multiple coins per spin, for example 1c at 5 coins per spin would mean you total spin cost would be $2.50c.

The single biggest win from regular play comes from hitting 5 of the scatter symbols in the form of the flaming puck. You’ll get 250x your total bet for this, with 50x for 4 and 5x for just 3 anywhere on the reels. The puck also triggers the free spins game with 15, 20 or 25 free spins depending on whether you hit 3, 4 or 5 of them.

Regular symbols give smaller wins – though keep in mind that you’ll get a lot of these with the 243 ways system and rolling reels feature combined. The red player gets you 10x your bet for 5, with the white player 5x. The goalie is worth 4x. All symbols pay from 3+ from the left hand reel in any position.

Flaming logos are the wild symbols; they substitute for everything except for the scatters and appear on reels 2, 3 and 4. They often appear stacked – taking up all 3 positions on a reel. This can create multiple winning combinations from a single spin.

Bonus Features on Break Away

Rolling reels is not the only feature which occurs during normal play. Sometimes a hockey player will appear from nowhere and crash into one or more of the middle 3 reels – turning them completely wild. This can create extra wins, though does not trigger the rolling reels sequence like normal wins would.

The main feature is the free spins round. Here the reels change colour (a darker purple look) and a new graphic showing some multipliers appears at the top of the reels. Play is almost the same as the main game – except that each win in a sequence of rolling reels win gets an increased multiplier. The second win gets 2x, then 3x, 4x, 5x and 10x. If you are lucky enough to hit a bigger win late in this sequence this can be a very profitable game indeed!

Final Verdict

Even though the graphics and animations are not the most up to date, this is a solid and lively slot which is bound to appeal to hockey fans. I like the combination of rolling reels and 243 winning combinations, and the multipliers for the bonus round add another level of interest to this. It is hard to say whether this would hold too much interest for players not familiar with the world of Ice hockey, if that is you – why not give this slot a try, and answer that question for yourself?
