Monkey Money Slot

It is into the back catalog of slot software house BetSoft that we go to find Monkey Money. This is a quirky and kind of endearing 5 reel slot, which is simple yet entertaining in terms of game play.

The cheerful tune on a loop and tropical island setting set the scene – and the second screen bonus round which involves choosing coconuts is an entertaining extra.

The bigger wins will come from lining up the symbols across the reels, rather than via the bonus. These are topped by a 25000 coin best prize, meaning that Monkey Money is a lot more than just monkey business.

How to Win on Monkey Money

You’ll want to see gold coins, the monkey face and the palm trees on the reels as often as possible in this game. These symbols all have very good prizes. I will assume that you are playing the maximum 5 coins per line in the list of prizes below.

Gold coins have a picture of a monkey on them if you look closely. Lining up 5 of these on a win-line will get you a generous 25000 coins. There are 7500 coins for 3 and 1500 coins for just 3 from the left hand side. Monkey face symbols are not too far behind, with 15000 for 5, 5000 for 4 and 1000 for just 3. Palm trees clock in at 10000 for 5, with bananas the top fruit (nicely tied in with the monkey theme) at 5000 coins. Next some oranges, melons, red sevens, plums and cherries. The cherries and plums pay a token prize for just 2 of a kind, while all of the other symbols require a minimum of 3.

There is one more symbol on the reels – the coconut. This has a special cumulative role to play in triggering the bonus round. Unusually for a 5 reel video slot there are no wild symbols or scatters.

Monkey Money Bonus Game

Instead of needing 3 coconut symbols on the screen at once to trigger the second screen bonus, you need 3 cumulatively. Each time a coconut hits the reels, this will move down to the bottom right, where a monkey is standing. He will catch the first one and hold it, then the same for the second – the third will knock them both out of his hands and begin the bonus round.

You will go to a screen with 4 palm trees, each has 2 coconuts at the top. Your only task is to select a coconut. What happens is the monkey walks to a tree and climbs up, throwing the selected coconut to the ground. This splits revealing a prize in coins. If you hit a rotten one, which does not split to reveal a prize, then the game ends and your winnings are counted. It is possible to get the rotten one first time, though you’ll usually get some prize coconuts first!

Design and Setup of Monkey Money

Overall, the design feels like an early 5 reel slot – with blocky and plain graphics and styling. This is not a bad overall look, just a somewhat dated one. The reels are enclosed in a bamboo poles type structure, with part of a beach below and the bottoms of palm trees visible. Your game is hosted by a monkey, who stands to the bottom right of the reels. He will stay still and blink most of the time, turning to look at the reels while they are spinning.

Symbols are bright and plain, with only basic animations (coloring mostly) coming in when you create wins. The animation when the coconuts fall down, and the one for the break out bonus game is slightly better. A cheerful tune is on a loop while you play. This is harmless enough, and gives the slot a light and entertaining feel.

Monkey Money is a 5 reel slot with 3 rows of symbols on each reel. There are 9 win lines crossing from the left to the right, though you can lower this number if you prefer. As with all BetSoft slots, you’ll not only be able to choose the number of lines, but your coin size (from 2c and up) and the  number of coins per line too. Also in common with other BetSoft slots is a ‘bet max’ button which automatically spins for 5 coins per line.

Overall Experience with Monkey Money

As long as you do not set your expectations too high in terms of graphics and game play – this is an entertaining slot. The bonus round is reasonably frequent, and the chance of a very big win from lining up the gold coins is always there.
