Better Off Ed Slot from Bally
Available In:
USA Regional

Ed, the main feature of this slot, is a green cartoon zombie. The play on words in the title gives you a hint that this is a humorous game. It is set in a graveyard, with eyeballs, brains and zombie hands rising in front of a gravestone all on the reels. There is a serious side too. You can win one of 3 progressive jackpots, enjoy a picks game, a free spins bonus round and even extra wilds added in the base game by the zombie Ed himself.

Setup of the Better Off Ed Slot

The Better Off Ed slot slot machine download uses a fixed 30-line setup over a regular 5 by 3 grid of reels. You can spin from just 1c per line (30c per spin) up to around $3 per spin.

The best paying symbols are topped by Ed – you’ll see a headshot of a very green and slightly confused looking zombie. Other bigger payouts come via a classic graveyard scene (moonlight with leafless tree), caution sign, disembodied eye and Ed’s arm sticking out of the ground in front of a gravestone. There are also a lot of playing card symbols in bright colors – these make up the smaller wins.

You’ll see wild symbols on the reels too. These have the word wild over a pink brain. Wilds substitute for the unique symbols and playing cards – helping you create extra line wins.

The final symbols say ‘free games’, you need 3 of these anywhere in view to trigger the free spins bonus round.

Randomly Triggered Wilds

Before some spins, Ed will make a guest appearance. There are several variations in terms of the graphics – though the outcome is always the same. Sometimes Ed will walk over the reels, others he will appear to climb from behind them or appear to be biting a wild symbol. Each sequence ends with a few extra wilds on the reels, which then spin as normal. Keep in mind that the regular wilds can still hit on these spins, giving you the potential for some bigger line wins.

Better off Ed Graveyard Bonus and Free Spins

The graveyard bonus is also randomly triggered. You will see the reels fade away, and get replaced with a set of 12 gravestones (2 different designs alternating). You pick these and will reveal one of 3 things. You start with 3 picks and some graves give you a credit amount, others a credit amount and an extra pick and one of them has a wheel design with a skull in the middle.

If you hit the wheel then you complete your picks, then see a wheel of fortune type wheel appear. The stopper for this is Ed’s hand! Click the start button to spin, and you can win one of the three progressive jackpots – or a cash prize.

Locking wilds are the big extra in the free spins bonus game. You’ll get 10 free spins, and each time you hit a wild it will stay in place for the remainder of the games. This can make the last few spins extra profitable – especially if you manage to combine several locked wilds with some regular ones (and some top symbols). The free spins can be retriggered during the bonus, and locking wilds on the first 3 reels can be ‘free games + wild’ symbols to help you do this.

Cartoon Graveyard Design

The overall design of this game reminds me of ‘Plants vs Zombies’ from Blueprint Gaming. The effect is certainly humorous, rather than scary. One sequence where Ed leaves wilds on the reels involved him opening his mouth and seemingly biting the whole set of reels. You disappear through his mouth and see the reels again! The other stand out animation is the jackpot bonus wheel. This is nicely done with the segments of the wheel separated by bones.

With plenty of animations and sound effects, this game is more immersive than many in the Bally range. The eyeball was the standout symbol for me, though there is no explanation as to how it came to be disembodied!

Will You Be Better Off Playing Better Off Ed?

Whether or not you win the jackpot, you’ll certainly be better off in terms of entertainment by choosing this slot. The base game is solid enough, with plenty of wilds to help trigger those line wins. With random sequences giving you extra wilds, the potential for bigger line hits is certainly there. Where this slot really comes to life is the free spins game, where locking wilds make the spins progressively more interesting. If you hit that graveyard pick game, you will also have the chance of hitting one of the progressive jackpots.
