Slots which involve gems have become a category of their own in recent years. The iconic game in this area is Da Vinci Diamonds from IGT, with ‘Starburst’ from NetEnt a huge online success. While Reel Gems from Ash Gaming can’t promise art masterpieces, it is a solid slot game with an interesting ‘Win Spins’ bonus round. You’ll find an in-reel bonus game too. This is linked to the ‘9 diamonds’ progressive jackpot, a pool shared between several slots.

Polished Setup of the Reel Gems Slot

When you look beyond the bling, you’ll find a 20-line slot with the usual 5×3 grid of reels. These win-lines are fixed, though your stake is very much flexible – from 20c and up from there. Auto-play is offered, though for a relatively small 25 spins max each time. There is no gamble after win on this game.

Regular symbols are divided into high paying and low paying. High paying symbols are the gems, which all sparkle in an exaggerated way. The biggest prize comes via the diamond, which is worth 1500 coins for 5, 600 for 4 and 80 for just 3. Next is an Emerald (1000 for 5), then a Safire (600) with a Ruby last (250).

Playing card symbols have been given a significant make over for this game. These have gold trim which is curved and elegant looking – contributing to the generally over the top feel of the game.

Wild symbols stand out the least, though these are important factors in the base game. This is the Reel Gems logo, and as the wild it substitutes for the non-bonus symbols to create extra wins. This symbol also has the biggest single prize – 10,000 coins for 5 of a kind.

There are two special symbols, one is a diamond ring and the other an ornate jewelry box. These have important roles – triggering the two bonus games.

Win Spins Bonus Game with Guaranteed Wins

If you hit 3 of the diamond rings, you trigger the free spins bonus. This has a twist on the usual format. Instead of winning a number of free spins, you get a number of ‘win spins’. This means that only the spins that you win prize on count towards your total.

Before you start the spins, you will see a screen with 3 choices. You can have 5 win spins with multipliers of up to 10x. 10 win spins up to 5x or 15 spins up to 3x. Over time, the payouts will even out – what you are doing here is choosing how much volatility you prefer.

Once you start the spins, every win will see a meter under the reels come to life. An arrow will stop on one of the multipliers, which is then applied to your win.

9 Diamond Progressive and Jewel Box Bonus

3 of the jewel boxes on the reels starts the in-reel bonus game. These boxes will open, showing piles of gemstones in each one. You click on each in turn, and 3 gems come out. If these match (they can be diamonds, emeralds or rubies), you will get 3, 2 or 1x your total spin amount as a bonus. If they do not match, then the box shuts – and it is then out of the game. If the gems match, you keep cycling through the boxes and picking up wins until the last one closes.

The progressive jackpot can be won via this bonus game. If you get 3 diamonds from each of the 3 boxes first time round, then the amount above the reels is yours!

Bold and Confident Design of the Reel Gems Slot

This game has a bright, bold and in-your-face look and feel. The background is a lavish engraved purple, with the frame studded with gems. Above this the logo shows an explosion of gems, with the big jackpot prize underneath.

Symbols are bright, with the 4 gemstones looking like someone is shining a light directly at them. The diamond ring bonus symbol is the most detailed. Even the line number markers do not escape from the bling, these are made to look like multi-colored polished gems. You’ll be treated to an upbeat dance-like soundtrack, which at least gets away with not being too obtrusive.

Should You Play Reel Gems?

There is nothing particularly memorable about this game. It is well produced, with good graphics and smooth animations – yet does not stand out for me compared to the many similar gem slots. Win spins instead of free spins is welcome change. If you are prepared for some volatility, then you can get up to 10x on your wins. You will also have a shot at the 9-diamond progressive jackpot via the jewel box on-reel feature.
