Double Panda Slot from Amaya
If there is one type of slot which every online slot software house has it one themed on Asia. Double Panda is actually one of several in the Amaya slots range. Other titles include Cherry Blossoms and Shogun Showdown. This is a solid slot, rather than an action-packed one. It has 5 reels, wilds and scatters – and features a free spins bonus round as the main attraction. The design is in some ways a little retro, particularly the animations and sounds. Outside of the reels the frame is a bamboo forest with a panda on either side, this is nicely done and gives the slot an overall attractive look.
How to Win on Double Panda
You’ll get a default of 25 win-lines and as you might expect from the name, lining up the panda symbols is where the best prizes are found. 5 of these on a win-line will get you a generous 10,000 coins with 2000 coins for just 4, 100 coins for 3 and 10 coins for just 2. In addition to their own wins, panda symbols will help you create wins with other symbols. These are ‘wild’ and will substitute for everything except the bamboo scatters to create wins.
Other animals are next on the prizes list. The pale tiger is worth 1500 coins for 5 on a line with the brown raccoon (or maybe different species of panda?) worth 500 coins for 2. Both of these symbols pay all the way down to 2 of a kind from the left hand side – other symbols need a minimum of 3 in a row. Carp and lily flowers come next, at 300 coins for 5 with the playing card symbols which have been designed with an Asian look to them making up the smaller wins.
The bamboo symbol is a dense forest of bamboo. This is a scatter symbol, which means that the total number visible on the reels is what triggers wins. 5 of them anywhere in view will get you 100x your total spin amount, with 20x for 4, 5x for 3 and 1x for just 2. In addition to these payouts, 3+ of the bamboo symbols will trigger the free spins bonus round.
Double Panda Free Spins Bonus Round
This slot has a unique way of awarding free spins. When you hit 3+ of the bonus (scatter) symbols these will each reveal a number. These numbers are totaled to give the amount of free spins. Obviously hitting 4 or 5 rather than 3 gives you a much better chance of hitting a lot of free spins.
There is little difference in the game play (an Asian tune is the main difference), though any win you hit during the free spins is tripled compared to what is on the pay table. This makes the top prize a very reasonable 30,000 coins. You can trigger more free spins with 3+ of the bamboo scatters during play.
Design and Setup of Double Panda
While the 2 pandas peeking around the side of the reels are cute, overall this is not the most beautiful Asian themed slot. The white background of the reels gives a slightly dated feel, and the mechanical sounds when you spin only reinforce that impression. Symbols are smart, though nothing special – the animation of the pandas when you win is nicely enough done.
Sounds are straight from the standard library of Amaya, with simple electronic tunes for wins. Whenever a bamboo symbol appears there is a gong sound. Since these symbols appear often, this can get a little jarring after a while. You’ll get a full Asian tune playing during the free spins round, which does help to bring this slot to life a little.
Both the number of lines you play and the bet per line are flexible. The default is 25 lines. You can bet from 1c per line up to a staggering $20 per line ($500 per spin). There is a bet max button next to the spin button. What I like about Amaya slots including Double Panda is that the total bet, balance and the amount paid are all very clearly displayed along the bottom of the control panel.
This is a solid Asian themed slot which is attractively designed. I am not sure that it really does enough to stand out in this crowded niche – though it is certainly worth taking for a spin. The 30,000 coin top prize (during the free spins) is the main attraction.
