Mobile game publisher Zynga soft-launched a Game of Thrones Slots casino on its iPhone and iPad devices this week. The Game of Thrones Slots game arrives in time for GoT Season 8, the final season of the popular HBO show.

Fans can relive moments from HBO’s Game of Thrones, including classic scenes, sounds, and artwork. The game allows players to collect cards depicting the most popular Westeros characters.

Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, Tyrion Lannister, and Arya Stark can be collected to help players level-up (and collect bonuses).

Though the Game of Thrones Slots Casino game is the first of its kind Zynga has launched, Zynga secured the rights to other popular tv and movie franchises. Eventually, Zynga plans to launch a Harry Potter gaming app and a Star Wars gaming app.

Game of Thrones Slots Casino Soft-Launch

The main drawback at the moment is the Game of Thrones Slots Casino is available for download on the Apple App Store in Mexico and Thailand only. Of course, that’s the soft launch.

With the final season airing on HBO at present, one can imagine Zynga wants to launch to a wider market before the series ends. If the soft launch goes well, expect to hear more new about the Game of Thrones Slots casino app. Perhaps in time US gamers can enjoy Zynga’s Game of Thrones.

Frank Gibeau on Mobile Gaming

Zynga CEO Frank Gibeau spoke to Pocket Gamer recently about his vision for the company’s next two years. Gibeau said he’s bullish on Zynga’s immediate future, stating, “Mobile remains the largest and fastest-growing games sector.”

We think with 2.5 billion mobile gamers globally there’s plenty of opportunity. We nailed 2018 and expect to see strong growth in 2019 and 2020.”

Merge Dragons!

Pop culture franchises like Game of Throne, Harry Potter, and Star Wars are not the only investments Gibeau is making. Zynga paid $250 million to acquire Gram Games, the publisher of Merge Dragons!.

Since acquiring the game in May 2018, Gibeau said it is already repaying on the investment. Describing the game he said, “It’s a charming and delightful game we’re just starting to add social mechanics and deep engagement to. Cleaning up your camp has a great zen quality to it.”

Zynga Forever Franchises

That might be underselling the game somewhat. Merge Dragons! encourages players to collect 31 dragon types and go on 600 quests. Frank Gibeau described the game as one of Zynga’s “forever franchises”, meaning a game that it projects making $100 million or more over the next 5 years.

For the record, Zynga’s other forever franchises to date have been Words With Friends, Empires & Puzzles, CSR Racing, and Zynga Poker.

About Zynga Poker

Zynga Poker is a social game with 38 million players, making Zynga Poker the largest poker site in the world. Dean Takahashi estimated in a 2014 article that 350 million people have played Zynga Poker, once again a record.

The game certainly has millions of daily players. Given the huge number of players who’ve played the game in the past 5 years (since Takahashi’s estimate), it is not out of the realm of possibility that half-a-billion people have played Zynga Poker as of 2019.

Zynga Poker is available on Facebook, Tagged, MySpace, and (formerly) Google+. It is downloadable for gaming on Android, iPhone, and Windows Phone. Since 2010, the gaming app is available in Mandarin Chinese in China, as well as Hong Kong and Taiwan. In those countries, the game is named Zynga Texas Poker.

In 2011, Zynga Poker hosted PokerCon, including a live poker tournament in the Palms Casino in Las Vegas. Since 2012, Zynga allows real-money gambling on Zynga Poker outside the United States — most notably in the United Kingdom. A major update in 2014 met with criticism from longtime fans of the game. They claimed it added too many features, which got in the way of playing poker.
