Tiger Palace Resort-Casino Opens in Bhairahawa, Nepal
The grand opening of the Tiger Palace Resort Bhairahawa in Nepal featured Bollywood stars and dance troupes from Ukraine and Thailand. Reports from Inside Asian Gaming suggested that Tiger Palace broke Nepali revenue records in its first weekend of operation.
Tiger Palace Resort has 3 main gambling areas, including a casino floor, a sportsbook, and poker room. The gaming space includes favorite games including blackjack, baccarat, roulette, Three-Card Poker, stud poker, and Texas Hold’em. The gaming tables include Indian favorites like Flush or Teen Patti, as well as 200 slot machines.
Tiger Palace Resort is located 7 miles inside Nepal from the Indian border. Bhairahawa is located across the border from the State of Uttar Pradesh, near the city of Gorakhpur, a city a of 673,000 people. Allahabad City, Lucknow, and Azamgarh are relatively close to the city of Bhairahawa, so many Indian gamblers could make their way to the Tiger Palace Resort in the coming years. Lucknow is about a 2-hour drive from the casino-resort.
The resort cost $52 million in American dollars to build. Executives said the resort was fully booked for the first weekend, which is expected to be one of two planned opening events.
Silver Heritage Group in Sydney
The owners of Tiger Palace Resort are Silver Heritage Group, a Sydney-based casino company which is banking on a wide customer base throughout Uttar Pradesh. Executives were on-hand for the opening festivities, which included entertainment, raffles, and a celebratory atmosphere.
Mike Bolsover, the CEO of Silver Heritage Group, said beforehand the grand opening “will include events for the local community and attendance by national and local government officials and dignitaries.”
Grand Opening a “Wonderful Success”
After the event, Bolsover said that the grand opening had been a “wonderful success”. He added, “We were overbooked both evenings of the event at the hotel, the international and local performers were well received by gaming and by non-gaming guests and in the casino we achieved several milestones including records for daily and monthly drop and for daily and monthly GGR.”
The events on Saturday included a drawing in which two guests were given 750 grams of solid gold, which were some of the giveaways visitors received. The Tiger Palace hotel opened in September 2017, while the soft launch of the casino was in December 2017. The grand opening is the official launch after the test-runs allowed management to fully train the staff.
Latest Indian Gambling News
India has shown signs in recent years that it might liberalize gambling laws in the near future. The government of India signed a deal with PokerStars for legal online poker after the Indian Supreme Court ruled such gaming was legal under certain circumstances.
Goa has riverboat gambling, though the legality of such casino gaming has been precarious over the years.
Tambola (housie or bingo) betting is allowed on some levels, though it exists in a legal gray area. Other than tambola betting, gambling is prohibited throughout the Indian subcontinent. Match fixing scandals in the cricket world have led for calls to legalize sports betting, bringing gambling out of the shadows.
Indian Gambling Laws
Many reformers want to update Indian gambling laws, because an 1867 law stills promulgates much of gaming inside India. Those reformers think it is a good idea to update a law enacted during the British Raj, both for nationalistic reasons and because Victorian Era laws could not have predicted online casinos or mobile sports bets happening in real time on Android or iPhone smartphones.
Until then, Indian officials can expect border town casinos on the Nepal border. In fact, Silver Heritage Group and Tiger Palace Resort of Bhairahawa depend on Indian lawmakers to keep gambling illegal inside Hindustan. As long as that remains the case, business should be good at Tiger Palace Casino.
Dining at Tiger Palace Resort
Tiger Palace Resort includes 6 restaurants, including Ramro Chowk, a blend of East & West with breakfast buffet. The list of eateries includes Terai (Nepali/Indian), Madira (bar), Machaan (cuppa/snacks), Cabana Avenue (poolside drinks/snacks), and The Jackpot Buffet.
While Cabana Avenue is described as poolside, it is actually indoors, allowing a comfortable view of the pool area while one receives refreshments. The Jackpot Buffet contains a wide array of foods, allowing visitors to sample international cuisine.
