Pennsylvania Online Gambling Earns $812k in July
Pennsylvania saw the launch of online casino gambling in July and we now know the first results. According to reports, total online gambling receipts in Pennsylvania were $812,306. This comes off of total revenues of $88.24 million for all of PA casino gambling.
These figures have been viewed as modest, but one has to remember the set of circumstances surrounding the current state of online gambling in Pennsylvania.
Revenues Light Due to Small Sample Size
The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board released figures on Friday for online gambling for July and the total take for online casino gambling was $812,306. For those that are thinking that $812k is a bit of a small take for a state the size of Pennsylvania, one has to remember that this covered only about half of the month since PA online casino gambling only launched in mid-July.
The breakdown of revenues saw SugarHouse earn $422,796 while Parx earned $260,124. Hollywood Casino earned $129,386. Online slots were the biggest win for the three casinos with the breakdown as follows:
- SugarHouse – $261,869
- Parx – $139,903
- Hollywood – $115,940
Online table games revenue was as follows:
- SugarHouse – $160,927
- Parx – $120,221
- Hollywood – $13,446
Total tax revenue for online gambling for July was $326,700. If that sound a bit high, remember that Pennsylvania has a tax rate of $54 percent on online slot games and 16% on online table games. Some have felt that this would be restrictive to the growth of the online gambling market, but time will tell.
Numbers Are Remarkable Considering The Lack of Variety
At a glance, it seems that July numbers are a bit light despite the fact that they only represent half of a month’s worth of activity. However, if you look closer at each casino, you’ll see that the numbers are quite fantastic.
Online casino offerings at all three casinos are somewhat small. For SugarHouse, they only offer about 40 slot games and a selection of roulette games. The entire library of games for Parx Casino consists of 46 games. They only offer four table games consisting of three roulette games and a single blackjack game.
Hollywood Casino has the largest library of online games with about 70 titles, including Video Poker, blackjack, French Roulette, American Roulette, and Baccarat. You’d think with so many online casino games, they’d be the leader in online gambling.
According to reports, Hollywood Casino did not have an online casino deposit bonus when they first opened. The site now lists a Welcome Bonus for new players, so hopefully, those numbers will climb in August.
As a whole, online casinos in Pennsylvania presently lack variety in gaming, and this is likely a component to the small take in July. This is expected to change in the coming months.
Online Poker On the Horizon
Another reason for the reduced take for online gambling in July is that online poker has yet to launch in the state. Online poker was regulated along with online casino games and sports betting, but casinos elected not to launch online poker at this time.
There are various reports claiming that Parx will open an online poker room by the end of the year, but Parx has not confirmed these reports. In time, expect partypoker, PokerStars, WSOP.com, and SugarHouse to all offer online poker in the state.
Another reason for the delay may be the ongoing battle over the Federal Wire Act. If the DOJ is successful with their appeal, online poker will be restricted to intrastate play. This would likely force some operators to abandon plans for online poker as the interstate network will be extinct.
However, if the DOJ loses their challenge, the interstate online poker network will be available and WSOP.com will be able to team up with sites in NJ, Delaware, and Nevada for online poker. We also expect partypoker and PokerStars to link up with their NJ counterparts to offer their own alternative networks.
