Casino Merkur Expands in Spain with Madrid Casino
Gauselmann Group’s subsidiary, Casino Merkur, opened a casino in Madrid this week. The Madrid casino is the latest casino expansion in Spain for the gaming group, which has 5 venues on the Spanish island of Mallorca under the “Merkur Salon de Juego”.
Casino Merkur began in the Czech Republic, where it owns 23 land-based arcades. With the company’s new arcade-casino in Madrid, Casino Merkur made its first foray on the Spanish mainland.
Stefan Bruns, the managing director of Casino Merkur International, said of the opening, “With this step, we are pushing ahead with internationalization and further expanding our growth markets abroad.”
Casino Merkur in the Czech Republic
One of Casino Merkur locations back in the Czech Republic’s capital of Prague has been renovated and expanded. The Casino Merkur International, the flagship arcade for the brand, now operates the city’s largest venue. Of the 23 arcades located in the Czech Republic, eight of the venues are located in Prague.
Casino Merkur International’s renovated and expanded arcade has been modernized and expanded from 500 to 1800 square meters — just over 19,000 square feet. The arcade is now nearly three times larger than when it opened. It now has 249 seats at gaming machines, while it originally had 88 gaming machines.
Eleven live gaming tables have been added for roulette, blackjack and poker. Last week’s opening ceremony hosted nearly 500 guests. Lou Bega, famous for his 1999 hit song “Mambo No. 5”, was the musical act which opened the casino.
Stefan Bruns said, “We will continue to raise awareness of the Merkur sun as a symbol of first-class gaming enjoyment abroad. Spain and the Czech Republic are strategic target markets for the company, which will be further expanded.”
About the Gauselmann Group
The Gauselmann Group takes pride in their casinos, as their venues provide a combination of exclusive atmosphere, first-rate service, and modern amenities.
The Merkur Casino company opened it first gaming venue in the Czech Republic market in 1992. Since then, Casino Merkur has become one of the most recognized gaming brands in the Czech Republic. The company takes pride in making their customers their number one focus, while maintaining healthy labor relations with their employees.
Casino Merkur says in its own press releases, “Our success is built on exceptional customer service which we provide at all our branches. We want our guests to feel good. That is why we put great emphasis not only on quality staff and a broad range of our drinks, snacks and refreshments, but we also value seemingly insignificant details, like having all our rooms air-conditioned. Together, it creates a pleasant atmosphere, which could be one of the reasons why Merkur Casino has become a popular venue for private celebrations and informal corporate evenings.”
Czech Gambling Industry
The Casino Merkur International Czech Republic venues alone have more than 200 employees. While this is small by the standards of Las Vegas or Macua, one has to remember that company owns 7 other venues in the same city.
The Czech Republic is becoming a hub of gambling activity in Europe. It liberalized online gambling a couple of years ago, though the tax rate was somewhat prohibitive. Kings Casino Provzadov on the German-Czech border features the largest poker room in Europe. PokerStars has a corporate deal with King’s Casino to host WSOP Europe events.
Spanish Gambling Industry
Spain also is liberalizing its gambling industry. Spain’s regulators allowed international poker liquidity sharing with France, Italy, and Portugal. The combined 180 million+ online poker community should help those states provide huge guaranteed prize pools to players, which in turn should lead to more interest from online card players.
Spain’s online sports betting industry continues to grow. With the start of the 2018 World Cup in Russia next month, sports betting revenues in Spain and the Czech Republic will be at a 4-year high. Casino Merkur currently does not run a sportsbook, but Gauselmann Group operates sports betting operations in Germany, Austria, and Denmark.
