Andrew Yang Abandons Presidential Campaign
Those hoping for regulated online casino gambling and online poker under President Andrew Yang will have to wait. Last week, Andrew Yang announced that he is ending his campaign for President of the United States. Yang’s campaign was popular in the gambling community, but ultimately his message failed to garner a following nationwide.
Yang Ends Campaign After Failing to Gain Caucus Support
Andrew Yang ended his campaign for President of the United States last week after he failed to gain any delegates in the New Hampshire primary. He finished eighth in voting with just 2.8 percent of the vote.
As the tallies were coming in, he told supporters, “I am the math guy, and it is clear tonight from the numbers that we are not going to win this race. So tonight I am announcing that I am suspending my campaign.”
Yang was a considerable long-shot to start with but his campaign that focused on providing a base income to all Americans was one that resounded with some voters. He was popular in the online gambling community due to his stand on online poker.
Yang had come out openly supporting the legalization of online poker in the United States. Presently, only New Jersey, Nevada, Delaware, and Pennsylvania offer legal online poker. West Virginia and Michigan have also legalized online poker and online casino gambling but have yet to launch.
The writing was on the wall for Yang’s campaign after the Iowa caucus earlier this month. He was able to get 1 percent of the delegates, but that was far below what his campaign expected. Yang had banked on independent voters and those that felt disenchanted with the present state of the Democratic party.
Yang Becomes Commentator for CNN
In an interesting move after announcing the suspension of his campaign, CNN has signed Yang as a political commentator. The announcement came on Wednesday and Yang took to Twitter, telling the world that, “I’m excited to join @CNN to help shed light on the election and the candidates’ experiences. Learned a lot these past months and am glad to contribute to the public discussion.”
The signing of Yang as a political commentator is a great move on both sides. CNN gets a voice with experience that has been proven to be more of a moderate compared to the remaining potential candidates. Also, it helps keep Yang in the public eye, something that he will need if he plans to try again in 2024 or beyond.
Will We See More of Yang in the Future?
This may or may not be the last we see of Yang, even in the 2020 Presidential Campaign. Yang has indicated that he would be open to being a running mate for the eventual Presidential candidate. He has been one of the least controversial candidates running and has been very supportive of others running.
His platform of helping to establish a base income for Americans is something that would also resonate for Democratic supporters, especially lower-income workers. One major issue is income inequality in the United States with many supporting a set minimum wage of $15 per hour. A base income for all Americans would help to alleviate some of the poverty experienced by people around the nation.
Yang has also stated that he will continue supporting online poker and online casino gambling regulation in the United States. Presently, there are no candidates left that openly support the issue, likely it is considered a minor issue when compared to things like health care, income inequality, and immigration. For now, Yang will have to serve as a voice for the online gambling community and will hopefully try and work towards building a campaign run for 2024 or 2028.
