As the Reels Turn Slot from Rival Gaming

This complex and enjoyable game has a theme which sounds strange when you first hear it. As the Reels Turn is the closest thing you’ll get to a mix of online slot and a TV soap opera. As you play you will progress through a ‘game map’. This is divided into scenes which slowly develop the story of the Casino El Paradiso and the characters behind it. There are different bonus games as you move along the story line too.

If you enjoy this slot (and it is hard not to!), there is some even better news. As the Reels Turn 2 and 3 are already available. These real money slots take up the story line where the last one left off – who knows, we could be seeing As the Reels Turn 4 before too long!

How to Win on As the Reels Turn

With so much going on as far as the story and ever-changing bonus games go, it is easy to overlook the fact that you can win money just like on any other video slot. There are quite a mix of symbols on the reels, including 4 different scatter symbols.

The best paying symbols are the Casino El Paradiso logo and the pile of casino chips and banknotes. Both of these will pay 1000 coins for 5 on any one of the 15 win lines, with 125 coins for 4, 20 chips for 3 and 3 chips for just 2. The other regular symbols need a minimum of 3 on a line to trigger a prize. These show 3 of the main characters (Matt G, The Don and Chrissy), each of which pays out 300 coins for 5. There is also a letter marked confidential (which plays a major part in the story), lobster and wine.

Two other characters have their own symbols. These are Ivan the piranha, which triggers the free spins game with 3+ anywhere on the reels and pays up to 50x your total bet for 5 – and Tommy W, the entertainer. Landing 3 of the Tommy symbols triggers a bonus game where you pick an artist for Tommy to perform as, with the reaction of the crowd determining how many coins you win each time.

There is a symbol marked ‘Bonus’ which will trigger whatever bonus game goes with the stage of the story you are at with 3+ on the reels. You will also find a, ‘Advance to Next Scene’ logo. Each time you hit 3 of these you will progress to the next clip – which also includes a bonus game.

As the Reels Turn Bonus Games

These do tie in with the story as you go along, and so describing them all would act as a ‘spoiler’ for those readers wanting to enjoy this element of the slot. As a flavor for what to expect, the bonuses are mostly pick-em type games. A recurring one involves helping the casino manager Matt G to sort fake casino chips from real ones. All you’ll have to do is pick the chips –either revealing a coin value or a fake which ends the bonus round. There are also games which go with the story line scenes.

Free spins can be triggered no matter where you are in the story. The game for these is the same as the base game, except that all wins will come with a 3x multiplier. You can trigger bonuses or even move to the next scene within the free spins round.

Setup and Gameplay for As the Reels Turn

Underneath all the soap based drama you’ll find a 15 win line slot with 5 reels and 3 rows of symbols. Like most slots in the Rival Gaming range, there is a lot of flexibility in terms of how many lines you play (any number up to 15), the size of your coin (from 1c through to $1), and the number of coins played for each line (1 to 5). You can also choose the auto play option.

Graphics are not the most modern you’ll find – this slot is already a few years old – though they are smart and functional. The frame of the reels is black and gold with the symbols spinning over a striped blue background. Characters have a characteristic TV cartoon look to them which you will find in many Rival Gaming slots.

Animated sequences are a couple of minutes long, and do bring out the different characters nicely – as well as developing the story. You’ll find the Ivan the Piranha plays an important role!

Sounds include the speech for these animations, which are excellent. The slot noises are very much the regular whirring and beeping sounds, along with a cash register ‘Ching’ when you win. There is a background track which tries to emulate the babble you’ll hear on the casino floor.

Overall Experience

For me this slot (and the next 2 in the series) are must-play titles. The concept of making a slot into a soap opera is unique, and the production plus imagination needed to back it up is certainly there. There is plenty going on in terms of different bonus games and ways to win – so you’ll certainly be kept entertained as you move through the different stages of the game.
