Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney Lost £500,000 in a Session of Blackjack and Roulette

Manchester United star Wayne Rooney lost £500,000 in a 2-hour session of blackjack and roulette. The losses came in a late-night session of gambling at the 235 Casino in Manchester after ManU’s Europea League victory of FC Rostov on March 16.

That is the story being told in all the British tabloids. The Daily Mail notes that Rooney has a history of gambling and long has maintained an account at 235 Casino.

Lost £500,000 at 235 Casino

As the stories go, the 31-year old footballer arrived at 235 Casino around midnight on March 16. In a two hour session of gambling, he switched back and forth between a blackjack table and a roulette wheel. As he drank beers, Rooney bet at the high roller tables.

Rooney did not play in the match against Rostov. Due to an injury, he watched from the box at Old Trafford. Some of the newspaper depictions seemed to suggest that Rooney’s out of control gambling session might have been the result of angst at sitting out a key match.

“Seemed to Be in His Own World”

One witness said Wayne Rooney “seemed to be in his own world“. Even in his Manchester United career, Wayne Rooney has a gambling connection. On United’s social poker betting app, Rooney’s face appears.

Another witness told The Sun, “Wayne was being extremely reckless, laying down chips which amounted to massive bets.

Those who saw the football star in the casino said his gambling did not appear to be the result of drunkenness, though he was drinking. One witness noted, “He was drinking bottles of beer,  but he wasn’t drunk. He was more interested in the gambling than drinking.

Gambling on “Red” a Lot

The witness to the roulette session added, “He was gambling a lot on ‘red’ when he was playing roulette — which seemed appropriate (red is United’s team color) — and was putting long-shot bets on solo numbers. He kept losing but that just prompted him to bet more.”

Wayne Rooney’s gambling hobby stretches back to his teen years. While at Everton, Rooney gambled away £50,000. He admitted in his autobiography that his wife, Colleen, was furious when he wagered such a high sum early in his career, before the massive contracts came.

Lost £700,000 in 2006 Betting Ring

In 2006, Rooney revealed he once had lost as much £700,000 in gambling debts in a dressing-room gambling ring for the English National Team. In 2008, Rooney lost £65,000 in another 2-hour gambling binge at 235 Casino. But this latest gaming session cost the aging EPL star 8 times the money.

Rooney’s Massive Football Contracts

Of course, Wayne Rooney has more money to spend now than he did a decade ago. In 2014, Rooney signed a 5 & 1/2 year extension that required Manchester United to pay $136 million American. He received about $26 million a year, or what amounts to £300,000 a week through the end of 2019.

Despite declining production, the star reiterated he would honor the contract through its length. Here in 2017, rumors have swirled that Rooney could leave the English Premier League to sign a $35 million a year contract with a franchise in the Chinese Super League. The contract would pay him $1 million a week to play football in China.

If so, then Wayne Rooney can do a massive amounts of gambling and it not really affect his bank statements. Hopefully, the world famous football star’s sport career in China will be nowhere near Macau, the most lucrative gaming destination in the world.
