Jeremy Kyle Discusses How He Beat Gambling Addiction

British tv and radio personality Jeremy Kyle’s many marriages and gambling addiction are back in the UK tabloid news, due to his recent proposal to his children’s nanny. British paparazzi tracked Jeremy Kyle to a Newbury racecourse recently, but despite the visit to a horse betting facility, it appears his long-acknowledged battles against problem gambling appear are over.

With his past gambling additions and his many marriages, the talk show host seems to be the perfect candidate for a guest on his own show. Best known for a tabloid talk show that’s been on in the UK since 2005, Jeremy Kyle has 2 divorces, a cheating spouse (at some point), and is now married to the nanny.

Last year on an episode of his popular talk show, Kyle talked about his past and where he went wrong.

Jeremy Kyle’s Gambling Addiction

Jeremy Kyle has talked openly about his gambling addiction, and how it ruined his first marriage and finances. In a 2017 episode, Jeremy Kyle told his studio audience, “I’m good at giving advice, not so good at applying it to my own life.”

While married to his first wife Kirsty Rowley, Jeremy Kyle had a secret gambling addiction that ultimately ended their marriage and nearly caused him to go bankrupt.

Back in 1990, Kyle’s addiction to gambling seemed to be inescapable. Kyle said of compulsive betting, “Gambling is the mistress that truly seduced me. I will never understand what a hit of heroin feels like, but gambling I get. Big time.”

Kyle Explains How Compulsion Works

The longtime TV and radio star said, “Plenty of days I remember taking money out of the cashpoint and going to the bookies, then losing and going again to the cashpoint — and back again and again. I would think ‘I’ve got to go now’, but there was this pull and suddenly I was chasing money, trying to achieve what has never been achieved: making a bookie poor.

“I would get home and think: ‘I could have lost £100, but actually I’ve lost three times that’. It became everything. My friends were faceless men in dingy betting shops.”

Took Cash from Wife to Fund Habit

Kirsty Rowley spoke about her ex-husband’s addiction, claiming she was unaware of his problem, until she started noticing money missing from her bank account without her permission. When she began to investigate, Rowley learned that Jeremy was using the stolen cash to fund his gambling habit.

By the time she realized what had happened, Rowley said Jeremy had gone through £70,000 and had previously run up a debt of £4,500 at the bookies and on betting phone lines.

Jeremy Kyle’s Problem Gambling

In his autobiography released in 2009, I’m Only Being Honest, Jeremy Kyle wrote, “I think it’s fair to say that gambling is the only vice that has ever really ‘got’ to me. I didn’t realize it at the time, but looking back, I can see that there was a time in my life when gambling was more in control of me than I was of it.”

He added, “In my early twenties, I got to a stage where I was betting every single day. My reasons for visiting the bookies had long since stopped being about having some fun. I was there as a creature of dangerous habit. My first marriage was crumbling around me and I sought solace in the only place I felt truly accepted.”

Once Kyle hit a point of no return he knew he had to turn things around. After he found himself £12,000 in debt, he was given an ultimatum by his bank manager that would determine the UK star’s future. The manager he needed to either pay £487 every month until his debt was cleared or declare bankruptcy.

Jeremy Kyle overcame his addiction that once consumed his life, even as he overcame the debt it created. He said, “What problems I had I worked at, and the loan I took out to clear my debts I paid back, bit by bit, pound by pound.”

A Marriage Filled with Deceit

Kyle married his first wife Kristy Rowley in 1988. At the time he was working as a recruitment consultant in an agency in Bristol.

According to Rowley, Kyle had won her over with his impression of Frank Spencer from the hit sitcom “Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em”. They were engaged within two months after meeting and, a year later, they had a traditional white wedding at her family home near Bristol.

Yet the couple did not even make it home from their honeymoon, before they started having problems. During their honeymoon trip to the Maldives, Kirsty Rowley threw her wedding ring into the sea after the two got into an argument.

The lies and deceit of Jeremy Kyle’s gambling addiction quickly took over the marriage and, shortly after the birth of their daughter Harriet, they divorced in 1990.

Troubles in Second Marriage

Nearly ten years later in 1999, Kyle met his second wife, Carla Germaine. The two met when she was a part of a contest on his radio show to marry a stranger. Though Germaine and then-husband won the contest, their blind date wedding didn’t last long and the two were soon divorced.

Jeremy ended up marrying Germaine in 2002. The two went on to have three children together: two daughters and a son. During their marriage, Kyle was diagnosed with testicular cancer. After having one of his testicles removed, he had successfully beaten the disease.

In 2015, 13 years into their marriage, the couple decided to call it quits. Germaine filed for divorce on the grounds of “unreasonable behaviour”.

Scandalous Affair

Right after the two announced their divorce, news broke out about Germaine’s alleged “passionate affair” with an English polo player. The two apparently had an affair while Jeremy was away in America, filming the US version of The Jeremy Kyle Show.

The other man, 25-year old James Carr, claimed that the two had met up for sex “six or seven times”. They became friendly after Germaine started going to James for polo lessons.

Married to the Nanny

Jeremy Kyle’s varied life has been news in the UK recently after he announced a proposal to his current love interest, his children’s nanny, 36-year old Vicky Burton. Burton became the family nanny almost a decade ago.

A year after the two announced their relationship, Kyle popped the question last month. The talk show host reportedly popped the question during a romantic getaway to the Grenadines Islands in the Caribbean. Kyle and Burton allegedly have plans to get married in Barbados, where he has a home and where the couple was seen not too long ago vacationing.

Vicky Burton looked after Jeremy Kyle’s children, 12-year old Alice, 11-year old Ava, and seven-year old Henry. Burton stopped working as the nanny in April 2017, but the two were in a relationship by that time.

Jeremy Kyle does not seem to have given up the gambling world entirely. Kyle and his new fiance were seen at the Newbury Racecourse recently, celebrating wildly. This time, Jeremy Kyle has an excuse. Kyle and Burton were celebrating, because his racehorse, Old Guard, had won the race.
